Childhood is a time of rapid growth and development but can children really suffer from depression? The answer is ‘Yes’. Depression can have harsh and lasting consequences for children. It can result in hindrances in their emotional, social, physical growth.

  • Generally, depression in children can be caused by any combination of factors that relate to physical health, life events, family history, environment.
  • Children with a family history of depression or have parents that suffer from depression are at greater risk of experiencing depression. They  become silent and do not open up to the parents about what is wrong and what is bothering them.
  • Thinking negatively, negative self evaluation, Psychological control by parents, invalidating his feelings, disrespect for his individuality results in depression.

If a child is sad doesn’t mean he is in depression,it can be just a change a change in his mood, but if we notice same behaviour in all of his activities, then something is really serious and he/she needs proper treatment.Children with a family history of violence, alcohol abuse, or physical or sexual abuse are at greater risk for suicide, as are those with depressive symptoms.

  • anger
  • difficulty in concentration
  • continuous feelings of sadness and hopelessness
  • prefer to stay alone
  • sensitivity towards rejection
  • sleeplessness or excessive sleep
  • crying
  • thoughts of suicide
  • lack of confidence
  • Feelings of worthlessness
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

  • Academic decline and failure
  • suicidal thoughts and behaviour
  • abusive behaviour
  • likely to be unemployed
  • problem in their work and social lives

Children’s social world includes people like parents, siblings, teachers and peer group. It also include different values which are the part of their culture. All of these things provide a context for a child’s cognitive growth and development.
During the ages of 3 to 5, preschoolers’ thinking skills are undergoing tremendous change. Their ability to understand different thoughts, people, events becomes more complex. They begin to think about how and why things work in the world. however, they displays many cognitive limitations. So, A teacher plays most important role in their cognitive development.  She understands their strength and weakness. She can best support them in their cognitive growth.
Here are some teaching methods,  that can be used to encourage cognitive development by the teacher:

In the preschool years, A child most of the times asks for explanation of why and how things occur. They also tries to explain how things work and why things occur. They are curious to know the reason behind everything and loves to solve different problems.  So, teacher should more focus on thought-provoking questions to develop their thinking skills.  Discussion sessions can be scheduled  among students in the class to develop their reasoning skills.
A teacher can give them problem solving projects like she could present students with “building materials” such as craft sticks, glue, paper and straws and ask them to figure out how to build a house of their own using only what is given to them.

Metacognition refers to thinking about  thinking or knowing about knowing. Children needs awareness in three areas AN AWARENESS OF KNOWLEDGE, AN AWARENESS  OF THINKING, AN AWARENESS OF THINKING STRATEGY. So teacher should provide opportunities to notice thinking. self assessing and self questioning must be the part of day to day activities.
Here, teachers can motivate children to reflect on their own thinking and learning by allowing time for a post-book activity. Teacher can ask children to draw a picture about what they learned. Teachers can also ask students to name one thing that they learned from the book or she can ask to write them the story in their own words.

Preschoolers’ memories are affected by their prior knowledge. Child at this age learns  new concepts and ideas more easily when they already have a good knowledge about the subject. They understand more when the topic is linked with everyday lives or some meaningful projects are given to them. So, If teacher is teaching about zoo, she should ask students to recall and discuss a time when they visited zoo. She must repeat important concepts twice and thrice in the classroom. Play way methods are always helpful at this age.

Social cognition also called emotional intelligence, plays a vital role in children’s social and emotional development. So,it is  important to understand what it is and how a child’s environment can affect the development of this skill. At this age, children begin to understand why and how others feel. Their communicative abilities begin to increase.  A teacher must be good in understanding child psychology to promote social cognition. With careful planning and knowledge of cognitive development during the preschool years, teachers can promote cognitive growth through everyday activities such as story time. Enhancing a child’s thinking can be as easy as opening up a book.

I must say, Teaching is most dedication demanding profession. If you ask a student, the reason behind his success, he will not mention the name of any books, but yes, he will definitely mention the name of one of his teacher for always encouraging, motivating and supporting him.

How can a teacher become successful? Is a teacher able to reach all of his pupils? The points which I am going to discuss now will definitely give you an idea about it.

1. Successful teacher have clear objectives and a sense of purpose:

A good teacher always have certain plans rather than focusing on syllabus just.  When she invest her time in designing curriculum , activities and projects she focuses on the purpose of doing. Having clear objectives provides her a framework to organize the things. Teacher with a sense of purpose is able to see the big pictures, which enhance her creativity.

2. Successful teacher listens her students carefully:

A child loves the teacher who treats him as special. A teacher who gives chance to speak and who listens carefully is able to understand more about her pupils. A teacher who never listens will definitely fail as students are not connected with her.
A teacher must know when to listen her students if she found them wrong then she have to help her pupils to move to right path.

3. Successful teacher has a good sense of humour with positive attitude:

Students loves a teacher who always enters in the classroom with a big smile on her face. It spreads positive energy in the classroom. Positivity breeds creativity. She plans her lesson in all positive way to explore maximum talent of her pupils. She has a good sense of humour, knows how to keep
students engaged in creativity. She has a positive attitude towards all the classroom situations.

4. Successful teacher uses praise authentically:

Yes, a teacher should always praise her students to boost their confidence. A confident child always tries to give his 100%. But a successful teacher use praise authentically, because the praise she offers is valuable. Students need encouragement yes, but real encouragement. It does no good to praise their work when you know it is only 50% of what they are capable of.

5. Successful teacher communicates with parents:

A teacher and parents both should work together for the growth and development of a child. They both must feel free to take help from each other. If both together provide support to the child then there is no chance of child’s failure. A successful teacher keep record of students’ activities and communicate it with parents and ask parents to do the same.

6. Successful teacher understands the needs of her student:

A good teacher understands the dynamic needs of the classroom environment.  Depending on the day, she might have to change up her plans, teaching methods to accommodate her students. Her vision and activities must be child-centred. She must be able to develop learning environment in the classroom by understanding the real need of the child.

7. Successful teacher takes time to explore new tools:

Successful teacher always tries to explore new tools to make teaching-learning more interesting and fruitful. She welcomes change in the classroom with advanced technology. She may feel afraid once, but she will understand that in this current climate, her students will be growing up in a world where technology is everywhere. So she will always try to  use and learn new technology in her classroom.

8. Successful teacher gives emotional support to her students:

Most of the time, a teacher needs to give emotional support to her students rather than just a piece of information. A child who is emotionally connected with the teacher listens more to her words and obeys her. She understands her responsibilities towards overall development of a child. She is never too serious, some days, fun is also her goal.

9. Successful teacher is always a good learner:

Successful teacher is always a good learner, she keeps herself update about her subject. This helps her to understand the need of students, as she also plays the role of student throughout her life. She is always curious to learn and never stops learning.

10. Successful teacher are reflective and they enjoy their work:

Successful teachers always take time to reflect on their methods and delivery. They always enjoy their work and tries to find out their weakness and works on it  .

I can understand that we all need some motivation to push our morale and to try something new, but keeping that spirit alive is also a big challenge. Most of us join gym but never take it seriously, So this is the time guys when we have to think about ourselves.

Here I am about to outline some of the benefits of going to gym:

1. Feel better about yourself and have a good body–

People like fit and healthy. We like to be around sexy people. We feel more happy and confident with them. This makes our life more energetic when people find us attractive. We feel good about ourselves.
So don’t think about the pain of workout, just remember your sexy abs and toned body, don’t give up because the rewards really worth this pain.

2. A great way to relieve stress-

Going to gym is a kind of stress, getting the time from our busy schedule, putting up the gym clothes, then probably a long journey by car or bus after that the pain of workout. Definitely our brain take it as stress. It is like fighting with an enemy. when our heart pressure increases, to protect ourselves  and our brain  we release a protein called BDNF. That’s why after exercising we feel relaxed and happy.  So don’t wait, As gym is the best place to release stress of our fast life.

3. Improve abilities-

Exercising  improves our stamina and build more muscles. which makes our routine work very easy. It improves our working ability. It boosts our brain power, sharpens memory and prevent cognitive decline.

6. Try your clothes on

If the money you’ve already spent doesn’t motivate you, then take some photos of you trying to wear the tight clothes and stick them where you’ll see them as visual reminders of what needs to happen. This will motivate you to go to the gym. The workout at gym can help you to get the figure you’d be proud of. But choose a size that is healthy and suitable for your age and body type.

7. Sweat together stay together

If you go to gym with your friends it definitely gonna be more fun. It’s twice the motivation to get there and to keep going. Perhaps schedule in a post-workout coffee and chat to increase the enjoyment of the visit. Ask your spouse, lover, friend to join you for gym, give them friendly competition by seeing who can drop the weight faster.

  1. 8. Works on your overall health: Going to gym works on overall health… It makes you physically, emotionally and mentally strong. you’re feeling down, stressed or anxious, get off the couch and get some exercise instead.

9. Switch up the workout :

If you feel bored with a fix  routine of workout or your goals are changed then you can switch up the workout  to keep yourself motivated. Also finding an exercise routine that you like doing and are able to do may take a lot of time and dedication. so switch up your workout whenever you like.

10. Be healthy, live happily:

Workout helps you to enjoy more balance, have more energy and feel better as it releases happy chemicals in your brain. It can help you to have more positive mood and confident personality. So exercise to be healthy and happy.

So guys, wake  up and start your workout to be healthy and fit.

Listening, Understanding, Reading and Writing… this is the most common teaching- learning method. Where a child learns, understands and he is evaluated on the basis of some written or oral exams.   How can a child be evaluated within 2 or 3 hours??? How can we evaluate them on the basis of grades scored?

Well.. We never notice and always give priority to his grades, but we actually  judge a child on the basis of his behaviour and moral values.

So,  What should be the main objective of education? Scoring good grades? Or what?

Here are few points that should definitely be the main purpose of education.
1.   To be a good human being:

The aim of the education must be to make pupils a good human being, while developing deeper values of compassion, care, calmness, honesty.

2.To transform body, mind and soul:

Overall Development means the development of body, soul (to discover inner self) and mind (concentration, memory, and reasoning). For the same the activities like yoga, reasoning and meditation are the part of curriculum now days.
3.Provide strong EQ with strong IQ:

Education must focus on emotional development (sensitivity, compassion, joy). It is the need of society. A teacher must never treat child as a product.

4.Develop child’s own inherent interests:

According to some of educational methodology, children knows everything what a teacher needs is to work as a motivator. They do their own walking. So education must bring out the child’s own inherent interests.
5. Self-discovery and self-discipline:
To learn self- discipline must be the main objective of education, because without self-discipline, it is not possible to discover real self.

For most of the parents it is sometimes difficult to understand the mental health of a child, or some of the parents judge their child on the basis of his grades.

I have seen when both the parents are working, they get very less time to spend with their child….sometimes the child faces problems with the peer group because of this irrelevant grades scoring competitions……….

Many of such cases motivated me to write about this current topic.

Well… I think most of you will agree with me that mental health is more important than grades. It is needed to observe a child’s mental health time to time to provide him healthy and developing environment.

Here are some points which will definitely provoke you to think thrice before talking  about grades and just grades.

You have to score to compete with this world:

1. Desire of scoring good grades creates extra burden…… which results in poor mental health.
2. What If, I don’t score good marks……child feels scared.
3. His focus is quantity instead of quality.
4. stress can make him sick.
5. It affects his health, relations and self-confidence.

My Child, always be happy and give your 100% in whatever you do:
1. He will follow his heart.
2, He will feel satisfied.
3. It will improve his mental, emotional, social health.
4. He will become a good human being, who understands others’ emotions, enjoys the happy and healthy life.
5. It will develop his confidence, spirit of work and enthusiasm.

So, if  a child is mentally healthy, he can know his own potential, he can easily compete with the future challenges, and  can work fruitfully for the community and the nation.

How to improve child’s mental health and intellect:

1. Interact with the child and try to understand his interests and strengths. It will improve his communication skills as well.
2. Never use words like stress, depression in your conversation.
3. Always speak positively.
4. Motivate him to read more, as books are best companion, make him believe that reading is fun.
5. Play with your child. plan some outings.
6. Let him learn in his own way… be a guider instead of  being controller.
7. Try to improve his imagination and problem solving skills.
8. Give him small day to day challenges to boost his confidence, appreciate his efforts.
9. Give equal importance to sports and other activities.
10. Be a role model for him.

If we think about our childhood, I think, most of us think about lack of resources, guidance and a developing environment.  At the same time, we still remember some motivational words by our teachers, parents and relatives who helped us to achieve certain heights in our life.

We all have some passion, maybe we are working on it or we want to work on it…. but we all have some passion at different stages of our life. What we seek is exactly seeking us.
We should provide all facilities to our children where they can experiment on different activities for their overall development.

Here are some points which can help our kids in finding their passion and inner peace.
1.     Make them free to learn whatever they want
According to me, at primary and middle school, a child should be given a chance to learn all types of activities like dance, drama, playing a musical instrument, art and craft, debates, gymnastic etc. to develop his interest and find out his passion.

2.    Join different classes with them
As a parent, we should also join different classes with them. As they feel more comfortable with us. When their interest is developed and they enjoy the activity and their trainer, they won’t need you further.

3.    Take them together for different fitness activities
To develop interest, find the passion and inner peace, a healthy body and healthy mind is must. If he/she is not fit then definitely he/she will not be able to learn and enjoy.

4.   Tell them about your passion
Yes.. Undoubtedly, we are the first teacher and role model for them, they definitely want to be like mommy and dad. So, tell them about your passion, motivate them to do something in their life, start his/her journey from the home only, show them how your passion helps you to attain inner peace.

5.    Observe the changes in their behaviour
When a child is taking some classes, you can observe from his behaviour whether he is enjoying the class or not. Ask him about his new trainer, lessons, peer group and his near future plans. This will really help you to find his passion.

6.   Help them to quit
It is not always necessary that the child would enjoy the class and activity. So please don’t force him/her to go to the class. It will create burden on his mind and you will get its negative impacts on his/her personality. Let him enjoy the life in his own style.

7.    Understand the fact that we all are different
We all are different; we all have different interest, views and thoughts. We should respect our dissimilarities. If I am a doctor doesn’t mean my son or daughter will be a doctor in future. So accept your child as he/she is. What your responsibility is just to provide a healthy and developing environment to him.  Let him/her learn independently.

8.   Your words can have magical influence on them
Always select your words carefully in front of the children. Never use negative statements which can demotivate them. If they are facing some problem in learning something then just help them politely, motivate them to put some more efforts, never say no to them.

9.   Counsel them if needed
Sometimes, the child faces problem with peer group, trainer or may be distracted, so here you should play the role of counsellor for him/her. He /she again will feel enthusiastic and passionate. This will help him to find inner peace.

10.    Take help from trainer
If you feel there is some problem then never hesitate in taking help from the trainer, may be your child needs personal attention.

11.Prepare a complete development chart
Yes.. prepare a complete record of the child’s development. Because in the activity, he is passionate about, his growth will be very fast, so it will help you to compare among different activities.

12.  Nurture their passion, as your own
As our body needs food, talent needs to be nurtured. If your child likes dancing, then provide him healthy environment to learn different folk dances as well. Because this is the talent, the passion….which will be with him always and everywhere, which will help him/her to release all the worries and stress in future, when you will not be with him.

He/she  will always thank you for loving him/her as the way he/she is.

India, the land of Gurukuls, where discipline is the first step in teaching learning process. Now has adopted many new methodologies in its schools and colleges. The Cultural exchange programmes are one of them. These are the programmes where teachers, students and parents from different cultures and countries come together to learn from each other.

 1Attention-grabbing Teaching Learning Process:
With modern education system, including smart classes, group discussions, Project based learning, I seriously can’t think about lecture methods. The cultural exchange programme motivates the students, it generates a desire of getting recognition all over the world. Their work is shared on different social networking sites like connecting classrooms, epals etc.

2.To make students global citizens by teaching cross-culture skills:
When students learn about different religions, cultures, languages, eating habits etc . It develops feelings of brotherhood and belonging in them. The Culture exchange programme provides them a platform to experience the life of people living in different countries. They become aware about how the world works.

3.Tie up among different universities to provide career opportunities for students:
Now days, higher education from abroad is common. The universities from different countries conduct workshops for students in India. Not just colleges even schools at Delhi arrange such seminars for senior secondary students.
    4. Makes you more comfortable in foreign environment:
Well.. when after your college, you want to work, you won’t feel afraid of going to Europe, USA, gulf or anywhere. Because you are familiar with different cultures and environment and not just this, your job application will get preference as well, because of your personal flexibility and adaptive nature.

   5. Visit foreign countries as guest, when none of your relative is settled there:

Wow.. I mean. .isn’t it amazing that you are given chance to learn at foreign schools and colleges and after school hours you can enjoy the life style of hosting family, just go to discos, have party.. enjoy their just thinking about it makes me feel so good. Work hard and party harder….

If you get chance to visit abroad at school or college level, you should definitely grab this opportunity.

Well… I think most of us can connect ourselves with this image . In our life it has happened at least once when we feel blank in front of our audience. Whether it is our School, college, office.. our success depends on the art of  Public Speaking and the most common fear of  people is Public Speaking… So here are some suggestions that will definitely help you to overcome  the fear of  the audience.
1. Either you are Student or Boss, you need to do Homework:
True.. Everyone needs to do homework before a presentation. You must

  • make your objective clear
  • plan your points to speak, in advance, better if you make some PPT or write them on a paper.
  • think the questions in advance, which your audience can ask you.
  • plan the satisfactory answers to the questions.

2. Trust yourself, be confident as first impression works like magic:

So friends… If I talk about a clean shaved man with warm smile, formal dress and attractive personality, you all will definitely be interested in knowing more about him by listening his speech and views.
So you should dress yourself  according to the interest of the audience you are going to target. And just speak your mind confidently, as your body language and postures speak more than your words.

3. Interaction links you with the audience:
Just think about those boring lectures at college where only lecturer speaks… ufff…completely boring. So to make your session interesting and more effective.. Use effective voice and involve your audience in the discussion by giving them some activities etc. The tone of the discussion should be in the form of dialogue . Use the words (we, us, our) to enhance the feelings of belonging.  If audience is yours they will definitely like you.

4. Be Polite, while question/ answer session:
This is the session where all your skills are tested, listen your audience  carefully, understand their need and then reply them politely, In case if you need some time to give answer of any question or you don’t know the answer… then just  answer them like all people in  one company’s HR department  do…. “This is not the right time to disclose everything, wait for the right time, We will do our best for your benefits.” I am sure the people working in some companies can relate themselves with this example. But seriously this trick never fails…

5. Always conclude your words and take feedback:
A few effective words can work better than 100 words, so my suggestion is always conclude your words at the end, which includes all the objectives, suggestions and action plans. It will be good if you take written feedback from the audience about your session. It will help you to judge your performance and improve for future.

Concluding words:

Just be yourself and present yourself confidently.
