Amazon is facing tough competition in the electronic devices market and plans to release its new 6-inch tablet with almost half the price of the cheapest Fire tablet. The new Amazon $50 tablet is set to target the users looking for a low-cost device with multiple features, making it one of the cheapest tablets available.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Jeff Bezos’ company wants to bring a new Fire tablet with a 6-inch screen to market for as little as $50, around half the price of its current 6″ Fire HD tablet, in time for the holiday season. It’s also looking to put out new devices with 8-inch and 10-inch screens, the WSJ said. It didn’t say what the bigger models would cost.
The move would potentially attract buyers looking for a simple—and effectively disposable—device for straightforward tasks like streaming video at home and shopping on Amazon.com. But such inexpensive tablets typically come with compromises like inferior screen quality, durability or battery life in comparison to more expensive tablets like Amazon’s larger Fire tablets and industry-leading devices like
Apple Inc.’s iPad.
Amazon is losing big time to Apple and Samsung in the US tablet market and this could be counted as a desperate attempt by the e-commerce giant.
